International Booker Prize winner, American Hindi and Urdu translator, and artist Daisy Rockwell translated into English “Awaiting the Zephyr,” a short story by award winner Urdu writer SM Ashraf.
Daisy Rockwell is an award-winning translator of Hindi and Urdu literature, living in northern New England. In 2022, her translation of Geetanjali Shree’s Tomb of Sand, became the first novel translated from an Indian language to win the International Booker. Her translations include Upendranath Ashk’s Falling Walls, Bhisham Sahni’s Tamas, and Khadija Mastur’s The Women’s Courtyard, and Krishna Sobti’s final novel, A Gujarat Here, a Gujarat There. Rockwell has also written The Little Book of Terror, a volume of paintings and essays on the Global War on Terror, and her novel Taste was published by Foxhead Books in April 2014.
