Uditi Sen

Uditi Sen (Associate Professor, University of Nottingham) is a historian of modern and contemporary South Asia who was educated in India (Presidency University and Jawaharlal Nehru University) and the UK (University of Cambridge). She is the author of Citizen Refugee: Forging the Indian Nation after Partition (CUP, 2019) and a co-editor and contributor to a special issue of South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies, entitled A Country of Her Making: Women’s Negotiations of Society and Politics in Post-Colonial India (2021). Her research combines oral history with archival records to trace how subaltern groups —– such as widowed women, Dalit refugees and indigenous Andamanese tribes —– negotiate state policy and the transition from empire to nation-state in South Asia. She is a co-editor of the forthcoming Routledge Handbook on the Partition of India (2027) and is also working on a monograph that traces how the Ang tribe of Andaman Islands were severely marginalised through projects of refugee rehabilitation.
