In her autobiographical novel, “The Camp”, Gunel Movlud commits to paper the life of a tent camp that she had to live in for five years because of the First Nagorno-Karabakh war (1988-1994). The novel describes a life story reminiscent of tens of thousands of people who were driven from their lands and lost everything in a day. It explores interpersonal relationships in the refugee camp, where individuals and families were subjected to extreme conditions, social hierarchies, and the rules of the privileged. Its main theme is the inescapable reality of people’s moral degradation alongside the misery, physical suffering, and disease that war and the refugee life caused.
