Shuddhashar (শুদ্ধস্বর) (Ren Stemme) was established in 1990 at the advent of the little magazine movement in Bangladesh as an independent magazine and periodical of anti-establishment writing, working towards a broader socio-cultural movement. These controversial publications — which included books critical of religious and social restrictions and taboos — led to us receiving several threats of violence. Some of our authors were also threatened and two of them, Avijit Roy and Ananta Bijoy, were killed in 2015. On 31 October 2015, our office was brutally attacked by one of the radical Islamist militant groups in Bangladesh. Assailants broke into the office with the intent of killing our publisher and detained all staff while calling for blood. They struck the publisher down with a machete. He survived and continues our work to this day.
Today, based in Scandinavia, Shuddhashar is a non-profit organisation run by, among others, writers in exile. We publish work at the intersection of politics, free speech, activism, and literature. We provide a platform to those who have written in pursuit of truth; who may have stumbled along the path towards knowledge; who risked their lives for greater understanding and for justice; who insist on the right to question, express, and challenge; who are driven to exile, where they live in fear or safety, in hiding or in waiting. To continue our work, we need your support! Your financial patronage will help us cover the administrative costs of running our platform, publish contents from many more persecuted and marginalised authors and activists, produce podcasts where they could share their own stories, and compensate all the contributors to our platform for their valuable contributions. Authors, whose voices are muzzled, who live in exile, often find themselves in a financially precarious situation. We hope the compensation they receive for their contribution to Shuddhahar will alleviate some of their financial burdens. Your voluntary donations will thus not only help these marginalised voices find their feet but also keep alive the spirit of free-thought in which Shuddhashar continues its struggle. We are also actively working to find ways to honour our patrons for their indispensable support.
